El Limon
At the beginning of 19th
century, with the arrival release slaves from Philadelphia
and, then, with the immigration of Antillean neighbors,
this area, located in the geographical centre of the
Peninsula of Samana, became a mosaic of cultures, giving
the region a variety and an own cultural personality.
Names like King, Jones, Green, Kelly...among others, are
very frequent between the families who live in the area.

Although in the environs of
El Limon there are gorgeous beaches, isolated and wild
(Moron, with its tube sunk in the sand, Limon, Las Canas,
El Ermitano...), this small town, in which begins to bloom
a familiar industry based on the echo-tourism, is known
for its famous waterfall which attracts thousands of
visitors from the whole country. Located in one of the
three main hills that compose the Mountain range of
Samana, in the North part of the peninsula, the Waterfall
of El Limon with its 40 meters of height and the walls
covered with moss, it is of a great natural beauty and one
of the main excursions of the Peninsula of Samana.
During the route of about 40
minutes by horse, you will be able to observe small
familiar orchards, cultures of cacao, coffee, bushes of
pineapple, coconut palms, abundant tropical fruit trees
like the guanabana, mango, bija, bitter and sweet oranges,
grapefruits or the good bread, fruit that forms part of
several traditional plates of the area.
The landscape will show you
small houses of happy colors constructed with the Real
Palm (Roystonea hispaniolana), much protected by the
authorities. This palm is also used as home and place of
nesting of cigua palm (Dulcus dominicus), endemic bird of
the island.
Although the original
vegetation has already disappeared, there are still some
surpluses of subtropical humid forest left in the shore of
streams and the pedestrian ways towards the cascade, in
addition to the coconut palms and cultivated tropical
plants.
Between the native trees and
some endemic ones we have for example Juan Primero (Simarouba
glauca), Cigua Blanca (Coriacea Ocotea), Uva de Sierra (Coccoloba
Diversifolia), Cabirma (Guarea Guidonia) of the Higuero (Crescentia
cujete), whose dry fruit was used by the natives like
containers for the water. At the moment, it is used to
elaborate very popular hand-made articles for the
tourists.
You can get to El Limon by
the Santa Barbara of Samana - El Limon - Las Terrenas
road.
